THE IRISH CRUSADE - A HISTORY OF THE KNIGHTS HOSPITALLER, THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR AND THE KNIGHTS OF MALTA, IN THE SOUTH-EAST OF IRELAND - By NIALL BYRNE K.M (author) - Hardcover

The Irish Crusade - Niall Byrne I found this one to be a bit of a slog to be perfectly honest. The author was a member of the Order of Malta (died in January 2012) and he notes in the acknowledgements the senior member of the Waterford group of the Knights of Malta, Iain Farrell KM who was the original instigator of this project. There's also a list of sponsors, most of whom have Knight of Malta connections, so in essence this is a very specialist, very localised history of the Knights of Malta in the South-East of Ireland, with some escursions into the Knights Hospitaller and the Knights Templar. The author likes his terminology and doesn't bother to translate terms or phrases from the original latin or french for the reader, and refers to members as Fra'. His thesis seems to be that you could regard the invasion of Ireland by English forces and orders as a type of crusade and that thesis is pretty convincing, however he burries it in a lot of verbiage. One little interesting piece I found was that there was a fulling-mill in Kilmainham while the brothers of St John of Jerusalem were there which was "operated by the flow of the Cammocke rivulet." which merits further investigation.
