Charles St.Austel, an ex-secret agent, has retired to his Cornwall home to escape the ton and the marriage minded mothers. He's also supposed to investigate rumours of spies near his home as well. The first thing he finds is Lady Penelope Selborne, neighbour and ex-lover. She's been avoiding him for years but he finds that his heart beats as strongly for her and although she is still avoiding him he thinks he might have a chance if tries hard enough.
